The original West End production opened on 12 July 1993 at the Adelphi Theatre. The cast featured Patti LuPone as Norma Desmond.

The American premiere was at the Shubert Theatre in Century City, Los Angeles, California, on 9 December 1993, with Glenn Close as Norma Desmond. The musical opened on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre on 17 November 1994 with Glenn Close.
